Sticks & Sand: Tools of Geomantic Divination & Spellcraft
Sticks & Sand: Tools of Geomantic Divination & Spellcraft
A one-off live online class exploring the construction and use of various tools, implements, amulets, and tokens in our geomantic divinations, spiritwork, and spellcrafts.
3pm (Eastern US Time), Sunday 26th April 2026
(This live online class will be recorded and sent out to all students after the live session)
This class – exploring implements and instruments for performing and empowering both geomantic divination and operative geomantic magic – is cohered around three central foci: Sand, Sticks, and Stones.
Firstly, we will pay homage to Sand itself; the original medium upon which geomancy was marked. In thinking about how we mark our shields, we will consider the importance of a dedicated shield-book for keeping your charts and notes safe and secure. The proper gathering of real-world sands and soils for our geomantic work will be explored. We will also assess foundational uses of various planetary tables and seals to plate and ground our geomantic spellcrafts.
In investigating Sticks we will not only explore squilling wands, slender switches used to mark figures in sand or earth; but also the two-sided stick-dice known as “druid sticks”, as well as spindle-dice, and a whole range of other dice which may be used to generate geomantic figures. We’ll even consider some grimoiric treatments of “Solomonic stationary” which we might want to incorporate in our markings and inscribings.
Our third focus, Stones, opens up analysis and appreciation of various lapidary charms and amulets which can assist us in our divinations: from planetary tokens for helping read on particular matters, to encircling beaded ritual loops for demarcating reading-spaces.
Lastly, we will discuss various Consecrations – from simple empowerment by exposure to more complicated rites and accompanying incantations for asperging, fumigating, and interring in sympathetic sands and soils – to enliven the tools considered throughout this class.
