Doctor Universalis: The Natural Magic of Albertus Magnus Class-Bundle
Doctor Universalis: The Natural Magic of Albertus Magnus Class-Bundle
A self-contained one-off class-bundle exploring the occult treatises, books of secrets, and folk magic we can deem “Albertine": the natural magic written by – and attributed to – St Albertus Magnus. This class-bundle includes a two-hour illustrated lecture recording and the accompanying slide-deck.
Saint Albertus Magnus, that is, Albert the Great (aka Albert of Swabia and Albert of Cologne) is widely regarded as one of the most influential clergymen and writers of the medieval European world. He was also, by his own account, an occult philosopher and magician, who left behind an arcane body of work and influence which we may simply call “Albertine magic”.
This class begins with introductory biographic study of the life and writings of Albert the Great himself, including survey of the various ways this important occult philosopher has been interpreted by subsequent generations of scholars and practitioners.
Notable works by St Albertus are considered: especially the important lapidary of his Book of Minerals, and his compendious studies on the occult virtues of animalia contained in various Albertine Book of Secrets. We will also explore more extensive and variegated collections of folk magic, latterly and more legendarily attributed to the patronage of Albert of Cologne, such as the Egyptian Secrets and the Petit Albert.
Finally, various practical observances of saint veneration and operative spiritwork with the tutelary shade of this venerable Doctor of the Church are discussed, including his guidance and empowerment of work with other dead magicians.
